Types of Competition
There are: PPPS Club Competitions; PPPS Trophy Competitions and External Competitions.
PPPS Competitions
PPPS competitions include: Club Competitions and Trophy Competitions
These competitions may be entered by PPPS members only.
All competitions will be judged by an independent external judge.

These may be competitions where clubs and societies compete against each other or a member's image/s are put forward for a recognised award or independent competition.
How and When to Enter a Competition
Submission of images (print or digital file) must be made to the Internal Competition Secretary.
Images (print or digital file) must be submitted before a published date or on the evening of the previous competition judging if no date is published.
Digital Images should be labelled by file name and submitted at 72ppi. Digital images must not exceed 1400 pixels wide by 1050 pixels high. Files can be submitted on a memory stick or sent to the internal competition secretary by email. (pyleandporthcawlphotosoc+incom@gmail.com).
Prints should be submitted in a 50cm x 40cm mount. Please put the print’s title on the back. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON THE BACK.
PPPS Club Competitions
- Three PPPS Club Competitions are held during the year starting September.
- You can enter up to 4 images consisting of 2 prints and 2 digital images only on any subject into each PPPS Club competition.
- Digital Images should be labelled by file name and submitted at 72ppi. Files can be submitted on a memory stick or sent to the internal competition secretary by email. (pyleandporthcawlphotosoc+incom@gmail.com).
- Prints should be submitted in a 50cm x 40cm mount. Please put the print’s title on the back. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE PRINT
- Images must be the work of the photographer and not copied in whole or part from another photograph, flat artwork or document.
- Images cannot have been entered in any previous PPPS competition/portfolio competition either as a print or digital image. Images may have been entered in another club’s competition.
- Images will be marked out of 20 in each category. The Print with the highest mark will win the PPPS Print Trophy and the Digital Image with the highest mark will win the PPPS trophy. In the event of a tie the judge will decide on the winner.
- Marks will go towards the Photographer of the Year and Trevor Owen Trophy.
NOTE: As a mark for these entries will be used to determine the Photographer of the Year and Trevor Owen Trophy, members should note although fewer than the specified number of images may be entered this will result in fewer points at the end of the year.
PPPS Trophy Competitions
Malcolm Nugent Portfolio Competition
There are four subjects in this competition:
- Nature: Animals, Plants, Trees, Insects etc
- Portrait or candid (people)
- Landscape or seascape
- Abstract or still life
- One image is required for each subject and the same image cannot be entered into more than one subject.
- Images must be either ALL Prints or ALL Digital Images.
- Images must be the author’s own work.
- Images must not have been entered into ANY other in-house competition.
- Digital Images should be labelled by file name and submitted at 72ppi. Files can be submitted on a memory stick or sent to the internal competition secretary by email (pyleandporthcawlphotosoc+incom@gmail.com).
- Prints should be in a 50cm x 40cm mount.
- Images must be clearly marked with the image title on the back top left hand corner for Prints, or labelled filename.
- Members are advised that work entered on any subject that does not conform to the subject will not be awarded any marks.
- The winner will be the competitor with the highest aggregate number of marks. In the event of a tie the competitor with the highest mark will be the winner. In the event of a further tie the judge will decide the winner.
- Marks will go towards the Photographer of the Year and Trevor Owen Trophy.
Clyne Jones Trophy
- You can enter up to 4 digital images on any subject Digital Images should be labelled by file name and submitted at 72ppi. Files can be submitted on a memory stick or sent to the internal competition secretary by email (pyleandporthcawlphotosoc+incom@gmail.com).
- Images may have been entered in ANY previous competition (including the Clyne Jones Competition).
- Images must be the author’s own work. Elements not of the author’s work must not be added to the image.
- The two highest marks from the images entered will be totalled to determine the winner. In the event of a tie, the third image will be taken into consideration. In the event of a further tie, the judge will decide on the winner.
- The Clyne Jones Trophy is an independent competition, which does NOT count towards the Photographer of the Year or Trevor Owen Trophy.
Alan Thomas Memorial Trophy
- You can enter up to 4 MONOCHROME images on any subject.
- Images can be any combination of Prints or Digital Images.
- It is a combined competition so digital images and prints will be judged directly against each other.
- Prints should be in a 50cm x 40cm mount. Please put the print’s title and your membership number on the back. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE PRINT for in-house competitions.
- Digital Images should be labelled by file name and submitted at 72ppi. Files can be submitted on a memory stick or sent to the internal competition secretary by email (pyleandporthcawlphotosoc+incom@gmail.com).
- The images must be the author's own work.
- The two highest marks from the images entered will be totalled to determine the winner. In the event of a tie, the third image will be taken into consideration. In the event of a further tie, the judge will decide on the winner.
Dennis Lines Competition
- You can enter up to 4 images on any subject.
- Images can be a combination of prints and or digital images.
- It is a combined competition so digital images and prints will be judged directly against each other.
- Images must be the author's own work.
- Digital Images should be labelled by file name and submitted at 72ppi. Files can be submitted on a memory stick or sent to the internal competition secretary by email (pyleandporthcawlphotosoc+incom@gmail.com).
- Prints should be in a 50cm x 40cm mount.
- The entry with the highest mark will be the winner. In the event of a tie, the judge will decide on the winner.
PPPS Photographer of the Year
There are two sections - Prints and Digital Images. The points awarded to the images entered into each of the three PPPS club internal competitions during the year will be totalled to produce the overall marks for each section. The marks from the Malcolm Nugent Portfolio Competition (prints or digital Images) will be added to each section score. The member with the highest aggregate score in each section will be the section winner. The results will be announced at the AGM.
Trevor Owen Trophy
The marks awarded throughout the year for both Prints and Digital Images in all in-house competitions with the exception of the Clyne Jones Trophy, will be totalled and the member with the highest aggregate score will be awarded the Trevor Owen Trophy at the AGM.
External and X-Way Battle Competitions
PPPS occasionally enters competitions with other local camera and photographic societies and possibly further afield. These are either known by a specific Trophy title or an X - Way Battle. Entering these competitions is a great way of broadening the horizon and building the photographic network.
Note
Digital image files provided for in-house competitions will be held in a pool for external competitions, unless the author subsequently ceases to be a member.
The competition secretary requests that print winners either allow the storage of the print by the competition secretary for external competition submission or to provide a digital file of the image for submission at a resolution of 300ppi and at a max of 50x40cm maximum in its viewing orientation.
